En busca de su séptima Champions, el Liverpool no faltará a los cuartos de la presente edición. A pesar de que el Inter venció por 0-1 este martes en Anfield en la vuelta de octavos gracias al gol de Lautaro Martínez (que llevaba 490 días sin marcar en competición europea), el equipo de Jürgen Klopp hizo valer el 0-2 que logró en la ida en San Siro para obtener su pase. El Liverpool no perdía en Anfield desde el 7 de marzo de 2021 (0-1 ante el Fulham con tanto de Lemina).
Hasta 3 veces estrelló el Liverpool el balón en la madera. No estuvo fino el conjunto de Anfield en cuanto a puntería. El Inter, por su parte, empezó bien, con personalidad, presionando a los 'reds', buscando explotar la espalda de Trent Alexander-Arnold, sabiendo que tenía que salir con ambición si quería remontar la eliminatoria. El equipo negriazul arrancó mejor que el 'red'.
Pero las mejores ocasiones de la primera parte fueron del Liverpool: un remate de cabeza de Joel Matip al travesaño, un buen testarazo de Virgil van Dijk (salvado por MilanSkriniar) y un disparo de Alexander-Arnold que salió desviado. Por parte del Inter, un chut de Hakan Çalhanoglu, que Alisson Becker desvió en una gran intervención.
Ya en la segunda parte, Lautaro avanzó al Inter marcar en el minuto 62. El delantero argentino logró un gran gol, gracias a un espectacular disparo, por toda la escuadra, tras una pérdida de Joel Matip en la salida de balón.
Pero las esperanzas que dio el tanto de Lautaro al Inter se empezaron a venir abajo al minuto siguiente, en el 63', cuando los negriazules se quedaron en inferioridad numérica al ver la segunda tarjeta amarilla Alexis Sánchez por una dura entrada a Thiago Alcántara, quien reaparecía tras lesionarse en la final de la Carabao Cup contra el Chelsea.
El Inter no pudo culminar su remontada en un encuentro en que el Liverpool estrelló 3 veces el balón en la madera. Si en la primera parte fue Joel Matip el que envió el balón al travesaño en un remate de cabeza (en el 31'), en la segunda Mohamed Salah estrelló el esférico en el poste tras una mala salida de Samir Handanovic, portero del Inter (en el 52') y repitió tras un gran pase de Sadio Mané (en el 76'). Luis Díaz tuvo en sus botas el tanto del empate ya en el descuento. El Inter no podrá luchar por su cuarta Champions.
