Dos goles del delantero argentino Valentín Castellanos condujeron al New York City al triunfo por 0-2 sobre el Santos costarricense en la ida de los octavos de final de la Liga de Campeones de la Concacaf.
Los tantos de Castellanos en los minutos 5 y 30 dejan al New York City con un pie en los cuartos de final, con el partido de vuelta a disputarse el próximo 23 de febrero en Estados Unidos.
En el primer tiempo el New York City dominó ampliamente el encuentro y la ventaja de 0-2 pudo haber sido más amplia de no ser por un par de atajadas del portero Kevin Ruiz y dos remates que se estrellaron en los postes.
El 0-1 llegó en el minuto 5 por un penalti convertido por el argentino Castellanos, quien también marcó el 0-2 en el minuto 30 con un poderoso remate dentro del área tras un mal rechazo de la zaga costarricense.
Castellanos, la gran estrella del equipo estadounidense, fue un verdadero dolor de cabeza para el Santos que, como pudo, atacó con remates lejanos y algunas jugadas a balón parado.
El equipo costarricense resintió la ausencia de sus dos delanteros estelares, el internacional jamaiquino Javon East y el cubano Luis Paradela, así como la del zaguero mexicano Everardo Rubio, quienes tienen problemas con su permiso de trabajo en Costa Rica.
El segundo tiempo siguió la tónica del primero con un New York City dominando y desperdiciando ocasiones de gol ante un Santos sin ideas y que jugaba para no recibir más goles.
Fallaron ocasiones propicias el brasileño Magno, el argentino Castellanos y el uruguayo Rodríguez que pudieron haberle dado una ventaja mucho más cómoda al conjunto norteamericano.
En el minuto 69 el uruguayo Santiago Rodríguez se fue del partido expulsado por una dura entrada a Erson Méndez, por lo que el conjunto neoyorquino jugó los últimos 20 minutos con un hombre menos.
El Santos intentó presionar en busca del descuento, pero su poco poderío ofensivo sumado a la solidez defensiva del rival, evitaron ocasiones de gol en la portería del guardameta Sean Johnson.
