El Chelsea superó al Liverpool en el segundo lugar pero dio un paso atrás en sus aspiraciones de ganar la Premier League al dejar escapar el triunfo in extremis en Stamford Bridge (1-1) ante un Brighton que mereció marcar antes del impecable cabezazo de Danny Welbeck en el minuto 90.
Romelu Lukaku había abierto el marcador en la primera parte, pero los 'blues' pueden quedar ya a 8 puntos del liderato si el Manchester City gana esta misma noche en su visita al Brentford.
Azpilicueta al poste en su partido 450
En la primera media hora de partido el Chelsea fue superior, pero el Brighton, con la novedad de Marc Cucurella jugando de central, mantuvo el tipo gracias a Robert Sánchez.
No obstante, al meta murciano, siempre solvente, le salvó el poste tras el primer cuarto de hora cuando despejó mal un centro en un córner y el capitán César Azpilicueta, en su partido 450 con el Chelsea, envió el rechace al poste tras desviar su remate Daniel Burn.
Robert Sánchez sí estuvo a su nivel habitual para tapar segundo después un cabezazo de Antonio Rüdiger y sacar con los pies un chut al palo corto de Mason Mount tras recibir a la contra de Lukaku (25').
Lukaku marca en un córner
El Chelsea, ya sin Thiago Silva, Chilwell y Werner, perdió también a Reeces James por lesión (26'), pero se avanzó gracias a la inspiración de Lukaku al rematar un córner botado por Mount con un inapelable cabezazo picado (28'). Es el quinto gol liguero del belga, titular en la Premier por primera vez dos meses y medio después debido a una lesión y a su positivo de Covid-19.
El Brighton, hasta entonces sin mordiente en ataque, reaccionó y de qué manera tras el gol. Antes del descanso prodigó cinco disparos lejanos ante la expeditiva defensa 'blue', aunque Edouard Mendy fue relamente exigido en uno de Adam Lallana (38').
Bombardeo del Brighton
En la reanudación el Brighton se adueño del partido e hizo sufrir a un Chelsea superado en el centro del campo. En el minuto 47, Jakub Moder desvió un chut de Lallana y el balón tocó la parte exterior del larguero.
Fue el primero de una sucesión de continuas llegadas del equipo de Graham Potter, que torpedeó una y otra vez al Chelsea pero le faltó el gol. Yves Bissouma, dueño y señor de la media en esta fase del encuentro, soltó un obús centrado que repelió Mendy (54') y Neal Maupay estuvo muy cerca de marcar con un remate cruzado que rozó el poste (57').

Thomas Tuchel dio entrada a N'Golo Kanté en el minuto 67 y con el jugador de los onces pulmones, como le definió Paul Pogba, el Chelsea pudo respirar el aire que necesitaba.
El Brighton dejó de tener ocasiones, mientras los 'blues' volvieron a crecer, se fueron de nuevo arriba y merodearon el gol varias veces, pero no sentenciaron y, en el minuto 90, el Brighton obtuvo la recompensa cuando menos lo esperaba. Cucurella culminó su partidazo poniendo un centro desde la izquierda y el recién entrado Danny Welbeck ganó el salto a Trevoh Chalobah y conectó un cabezazo perfecto.
El primer gol del Brighton en Stamford Bridge en toda su historia hizo justicia a los méritos de los jugadores de Potter y supone otro paso atrás de un Chelsea que sigue perdiendo gas en sus aspiraciones de ganar la Premier al ceder su tercer empate en las últimas cuatro jornadas.
