El Betis suma un punto ante el Leverkusen en un duelo de vértigo en el que ambos pudieron llevarse el triunfo. Borja Iglesias marcó y Bravo salvó.
La locura terminó en tablas. Ni Betis ni Bayer Leverkusen lograron reinar en una batalla ofensiva de altísimo nivel que no encontró vencedor. Ambos se citan dentro de dos semanas para dirimir de nuevo un liderato del grupo G que sigue muy abierto. Los de Pellegrini vivieron entre el cielo y el infierno durante noventa minutos que esperanzaron con el tanto de Borja Iglesias y suspiraron con una parada salvadora de Claudio Bravo en el último suspiro. No defraudó nadie. Pero quizás nadie se fue totalmente satisfecho.
El Leverkusen tardó poco en explotar sus virtudes y aplicarlas en los puntos flacos del Betis. Diaby destrozó a Montoya con su velocidad y sólo la aparición de Bravo evitó el desastre a los 37 segundos. Cinco minutos después, el francés volvió a emerger por esa banda izquierda para esquivar a Montoya, regatear a Bravo y ver cómo Alario estropeaba su nueva demostración de fuerzas. La madera, a los diez minutos, fue la salvadora de los verdiblancos tras una acción de estrategia por parte del Leverkusen. Sin Canales, sufrió la medular bética. Carvalho fue víctima de una presión intensa del cuadro alemán y Fekir apenas lograba girarse hacia la portería rival. Pero el paso de los minutos dio ciertos respiros al Betis, que pasados los 20 minutos encontró su mejor acercamiento con un buen disparo de Borja Iglesias cuyo rechazo no pudo ejecutar Aitor Ruibal con todo a favor.
Diaby y Bellarabi se tomaron un descanso y el Betis trató de tener más salidas desde que Carvalho comprendió que debía tener más peso en el envite. El ida y vuelta no convenía a los de Pellegrini, que encontraron en la lucha de Ruibal y las ayudas de Borja Iglesias más aire que esperanza. El Panda se asoció bien con Fekir en una acción dentro del área que fue salvada por el imponente Tapsoba, pero ni Betis ni Leverkusen se encontraban en su mejor contexto. Las fuerzas se igualaron antes del descanso mientras el Villamarín rugía para aportar su granito de arena.
Pellegrini varió su plan para arreglar carencias. Quiso tirar de velocidad y puso a Álex Moreno y Lainez en escena. Lo agradeció el equipo, que firmó quince minutos brillantes en la reanudación. El mexicano dañó al cuadro alemán con su movilidad confirmando que ya está a punto tras su lesión. Provocó faltas y abrió espacios. El Leverkusen mantuvo su intención de jugar al vértigo, pero sus alas ya no parecían tan dañinas y tiró de Wirtz y Schick para el último cuarto de hora. Fue a balón parado cuando la sonrisa verdiblanca se alargó en pleno tramo de brillantez. Canales lanzó un balón parado hacia el área y Frimpong tocó el balón con su brazo izquierdo de forma involuntaria. El VAR dictaminó el penalti y Borja Iglesias no perdonó.
Quiso calmar el choque el Betis con el marcador a favor, pero no lo consiguió. Paulinho dio más fuerza aún al Leverkusen y la mala fortuna se cruzó con el destino bético tras un desvío de William Carvalho después de un disparo que apenas parecía inquietar a Bravo. El 1-1 golpeó tanto al equipo de Pellegrini como a las gradas verdiblancas. No tiró la toalla el equipo bético, que trató de conectar con la frescura de Juanmi y Willian José, aunque fue el Leverkusen el que pudo llevarse la gloria en el último suspiro con un disparo de Demirbay que encontró en Claudio Bravo una respuesta tan sobresaliente como lo fue el partido. De atrevidos vive el fútbol. Y el Betis sueña ahora con reinar en Leverkusen para decir su última palabra.
