Argentina ganó en el Monumental con un solitario gol de cabeza del jugador del Inter. Los de Scaloni sacaron siete puntos de nueve posibles y piensan en Qatar.
Con un día frío y de mucho viento, la gente iba llegando al Monumental. Desde Córdoba, Mar del Plata, La Plata y más punto del país llegaban hinchas para ver a la 'Scaloneta'. El clima, adentro de la cancha, era festivo, los hinchas están con este grupo de jugadores y lo demuestran cada vez que pueden.
En el terreno de juego, Di María volvía a jugar de titular pero esta vez por la izquierda, en el lugar que suele ocupar Nico González. El del PSG arrancó bien teniendo algunas chances para abrir el partido pero no acertó.
Tampoco acertaba Cueva con un tiro libre frontal que Dibu Martínez se encargaba de despejar. El partido estaba rápido y con ritmo, Gareca pedía orden a los suyos y Perú, pese a las bajas, lo intentaba, al igual que Cuti Romero con un cabezazo que no subió al marcador por un fuera de juego milimétrico que tuvo que comprobar el VAR.
El bloque bajo de Gareca resultaba efectivo en estos primeros minutos. Sin pelota, muy fiables, con pelota, móviles y atrevidos. Argentina, por su parte, seguía el libreto entrando por los costados, con Di María llegando a un centro de Molina Lucero, que estiraba al equipo por la derecha.
El partido se friccionaba y lo más claro tenía nombre y apellido: Rodrigo de Paul. El del Atlético de Madrid hacía todo y todo bien. Además, Lautaro daba un susto después de un duro golpe de Gallese, pero minutos después se encargaba de demostrar que estaba en óptimas condiciones, tan en condiciones que abrió el partido para Argentina. Tras un gran centro de Molina Lucero, el del Inter anticipó y puso el primer gol del partido en la cancha de River. El '22' argentino decía 'acá estoy yo y soy el delantero titular' ante las críticas de algunos sectores de la opinión pública. Así, Argentina se iba con ventaja al descanso.
Perú tenía poco que perder y mucho por ganar, por los que lo de Gareca salieron al segundo tiempo un poco más arriba a buscar el empate, pero sin volverse locos. Estando Messi enfrente, hacer locuras puede ser algo peligroso.
Argentina bajaba el ritmo del partido, la intensidad mostrada en el primer tiempo era difícil de mantener, por lo que Perú aprovechaba esa situación para dar dos pasos adelante. Esa bajada de intensidad y concentración hizo que Perú disfrutase de una chance clara para el empate.
Farfán, recién ingresado, tiraba una gran diagonal para poner en aprietos a Emi Martínez, que salía lento y derribaba al peruano, que hoy cumplía 100 partidos con la camiseta de la selección. Yotún, el encargado del penal, lo tiró al travesaño y desperdició la mejor chance de los de Gareca en el partido.
Scaloni, un poco tarde, movía el banco de suplentes. Nico González y Guido Rodríguez ingresaban por Di María y Paredes para darle un poco de aire al equipo. Los tres partidos al hilo se notaban y las fuerzas flaqueaban.
La diferencia era corta y Argentina no lograba llegar con claridad al arco de Gallese. El riesgo del empate estaba y Scaloni desde el banco de suplentes les pedía más a los suyos. Joaquín Correa entraba por Lautaro Martínez para darle un poco más de fuerza a la parte de arriba del equipo argentino, aunque el que cabeceó un córner fue Guido Rodríguez, pero Sampaio dijo que no era gol y sí falta del bético.
El partido se terminaba y los hinchas cantaban. El encuentro de Argentina no fue tan bueno como contra Uruguay y Perú siempre dio la cara. Siete puntos de nueve y ya pie y medio en Qatar. Argentina vuelve a jugar en el mes de noviembre contra la Celeste de visitante y contra Brasil en San Juan para certificar el pase al Mundial.
