Oscar Tabárez atendió a los medios en la rueda de prensa previa a la convocatoria de Uruguay en esta triple fecha de eliminatorias, donde uno de los temas más recurrentes fue la caída de la convocatoria de uno de los pilares de la absoluta durante la última década, el delantero del Manchester United, Edinson Cavani.
El DT de Uruguay ha sostenido ante la prensa, que esta decisión ha sido tomada de forma general entre jugador y cuerpo técnico, y en sus propias palabras, ha dicho que se trata de una "estrategia deportiva" relativa al estado de forma del atacante. "Se asila de su equipo, de su actividad, el panorama que nos habría presentado sería la pérdida que ha ganado del mejoramiento de su forma, recién jugó los primeros minutos desde que jugó la Copa América, eso lo llevaría a quedar relegado en la posibilidad de integrar el plantel que sigue compitiendo en la Premier y para octubre seguramente tendría que volver prácticamente sin jugar en su equipo", declaró Tabárez en rueda de prensa.
Desde la eliminación de Copa América de Uruguay, ocurrida hace prácticamente 2 meses, Cavani solo ha disputado unos 40 minutos ante los Wolves la pasada jornada de Premier, unos datos que hacen entender la falta de ritmo del jugador, que se podría ampliar en caso de viajar con su selección, y luego realizar los 10 días de cuarentena pertienentes que exige Gran Bretaña a personas que llegan desde destinos calificados como "Zona Roja" en relación a la situación pandémica.
De esta manera, Tabárez no contará para esta triple fecha que los enfrenta a Perú, Bolivia y Ecuador, con ninguno de sus dos delanteros titulares: Cavani por el motivo conocido, y Luis Suárez, que arrastra problemas de rodilla.
Tabárez deja una puerta abierta a contar con Cavani para la próxima cita en el calendario de la selección uruguaya, que tendrá lugar en el mes de octubre, aunque alega que no es decisión final suya la de contar con el aún dorsal 7 de los Red Devils. "¿Quiénes deben encargarse de esas gestiones? La AUF, Conmebol, FIFA y agregaría que tendrían que participar representantes de los equipos de la Premier, colaborar en la solución del problema. No es asunto de entrenadores ni de quién le paga los sueldos a los jugadores, en esas cosas yo no me meto. Porque además no está bien escudarse en decisiones del Estado con fines sanitarios para evitar desventajas deportivas o para sacar ventajas del mismo tenor", argumentó el técnico al respecto.
