La UEFA anunció a los tres finalistas al Jugador UEFA del año. Se trata de De Bruyne, Kanté y Jorginho, uno del City y dos del Chelsea, que optarán a ser el mejor futbolista en competiciones europeas de la pasada temporada. El dominio de la Premier sobre el resto de ligas queda patente y los ingleses obtienen un pleno. El que resulte más votado sustituirá en el palmarés a Lewandowski, ganador el pasado curso.
Jorginho fue el más laureado, pues ganó Champions y Eurocopa. Kanté, por su parte, logró ser campeón de Europa con el Chelsea pero no de la Euro con Francia. Por último, De Bruyne fue pieza clave para levantar la Premier con el Manchester City, además de la Carabao Cup.
Votación
La lista de tres candidatos finales fue el resultado de los votos de los 24 seleccionadores participantes en la Euro 2020 y los 80 entrenadores de los clubes que jugaron la fase de grupos de la Champions y la Europa League. Además, también participaron 55 periodistas, uno por cada federación miembro de la UEFA.
Se pidió a los entrenadores y a los periodistas que seleccionaran una lista de tres jugadores asignando respectivamente cinco, tres y un punto a cada uno de ellos. El resultado final se basó en el número total de votos emitidos por los entrenadores y los periodistas. A los entrenadores no se les permitió votar por jugadores de su propio equipo.
Los tres jugadores que recibieron más puntos en total son De Bruyne, Kanté y Jorginho, entre los que está el ganador. El nombre se anunciará durante la gala del fútbol europeo que se celebrará el 26 de agosto en Estambul, coincidiendo con el sorteo de la Champions.
Entrenadores
También se oficializó el nombre de los tres técnicos que optan a llevarse el premio en el apartado de entrenadores. En este caso, Guardiola, Mancini y Tuchel son los que pelearán por el galardón. Mancini, como campeón de la Euro, y Tuchel, como campeón de Europa, parten con ventaja sobre Guardiola, que conquistó la Premier y la Carabao Cup.
