Nagelsmann comienza su etapa en el campeón alemán empatando en casa del Mönchengladbach dando una imagen bastante pobre.

Nagelsmann alineaba un once muy parecido al que alineará en las grandes citas de primavera. Sin embargo, este once tipo tardó en despertar de la pretemporada. En la primera media hora el Mönchengladbach dominó el partido. Marcó un ritmo frenético y, sin necesidad de presionar demasiado (que también lo hacía) era capaz de robar al Bayern en salida de balón. Fue un partido con grandes porteros. Neuer salvó los momentos de debilidad visitantes (con permiso de un fallo terrible de Thuram) y Sommer, uno de los hombres del partido, evitó varias veces el 1-2.
La afición del Borussia-Park tiene motivos para quejarse de dos posibles penaltis, a cada cual más claro, de Upamecano a Thuram que el árbitro ni revisó en el VAR. Sólo una amarilla pudo parar las protestas de Adi Hutter.
Finalmente, el partido llegó a su fin con un empate justo, ilusionante para el Mönchengladbach y bastante frío para el Bayern.
