El entrenador de Estados Unidos, Gregg Berhalter, se mostró orgulloso después de ver como su equipo plagado de jóvenes superó la prueba de los cuartos de final de la decimosexta edición de la Copa Oro al vencer por 1-0 a la selección de Jamaica, con el gol que al minuto 83 consiguió Matthew Hoppe.
Aunque reconoció que Jamaica les había dominado en determinados momentos del partido y pudieron haber conseguido algún gol, antes que llegase el suyo y definitivo, en parte producto de un fallo del arquero de los Reggae Boyz, Andre Blake, también dijo que habían sabido aguantar y encontrar el momento para sentenciar con la salida en la segunda parte de los veteranos.
"La salida de Cristian Roldán y Gyasi Zardes, a partir del minuto 62, nos dio un nuevo impulso que fue muy importante recibirlo en esa fase del partido", destacó Berhalter sobre los suplentes veteranos. "Precisamente un centro de Roldán fue el que hizo posible el remate de Hoppe".
Berhalter dijo que Roldan había sido inteligente al sacar de su línea de seguridad a Blake y aunque luego falló el arquero, que milita en el Philadelphia Unión, de la MLS, el mérito fue también para Hoppe, el delantero del 20 años del FC Schalke 04, que marcó su primer gol con la selección de Estados Unidos.
"La forma en que fue capaz de conseguir oportunidades, tuvo un par de acciones claras al gol y eso se debe a su movimiento en el área y estaba luchando por definir", explicó Berhalter. "Cuando un chico pone ese tipo de esfuerzo y aguanta y sigue adelante, queríamos mantenerlo en el campo porque pensamos que estaba haciendo un buen trabajo y su objetivo hacer daño al rival".
Lo hizo en el momento más oportuno, a los 83 minutos, y cuando los más de 40.000 aficionados que ocuparon los asientos de las gradas del AT&T Stadium, de Arlington (Texas), ya se estaban preparando para disfrutar de una prórroga de 30 minutos más de acción.
Berhalter reconoció que un alargue no hubiese sido lo mejor para su equipo, porque había mejorado en el juego de ataque en la segunda parte, mientras que en la defensa siguió sin permitir que le hiciesen ningún gol y en lo que va de torneo solo ha cedido uno.
"Como dije la víspera del partido, estamos aprendiendo con todos los jóvenes y no tenemos ninguna duda que buscamos mejorar en cada encuentro, de ahí que el duelo ante Jamaica, especialmente en la segunda parte, nos puede servir de mucho cuando el próximo jueves nos enfrentemos a Catar", subrayó Berhalter.
Aunque el entrenador estadounidense destacó que estaban invictos en lo que iba de torneo, lo que más le llenaba era el esfuerzo que todo el grupo había realizado hasta alcanzar las semifinales con una gran dosis de determinación, capacidad de aprendizaje y creciendo tanto a nivel individual como colectivo.
"Catar es un buen equipo", admitió Berhalter "Por eso el partido ante Jamaica realmente nos ayudó de gran manera a la hora de prepararnos para la siguiente prueba que será aun más complicada porque nos vamos a enfrentar a un rival que también nos va a exigir al máximo y debemos estar preparados para aceptar el reto".
