El atacante guajiro ha deslumbrado con su nivel en la Tricolor durante la Copa América 2021, ratificado lo mostrado en Junior y Porto.
De excelente temporada 2020 y gran inicio en el presente año, Luis Fernando Díaz está en el mejor momento de su aún corta carrera como futbolista profesional. Con solo 24 años, este atacante de origen Wayúu viene demostrando que talento de sobra y una mentalidad fuerte para llegar lejos.
En poco tiempo pasó de ser un desconocido futbolista, que tuvo sus primeros destellos en la Selección Colombia Indígena, a ser uno de los pilares del Junior de Barranquilla, tras ser descubierto por el mismísimo 'Pibe' Valderrama en el Barranquilla F.C., y ahora de la Selección Colombia de Mayores gracias a la consolidación que ha tenido en el Porto, club al que llegó hace dos temporadas.
El Guajiro, como es conocido en el fútbol colombiano, es un atacante versátil que puede hacer las veces de centrodelantero, mediapunta y extremo. Tiene un exquisito trato de balón, gran manejo de los tiempos y una gran pegada de corta y media distancia. Sumó 20 goles y 9 asistencias en 106 partidos disputados con Junior, equipo con el que logró la Copa Colomba, la Liga Águila y el subtítulo de la Copa Sudamericana, todos como figura.
Ya en Porto aumentó notablemente su nivel y producción con 25 goles y 13 asistencias en 97 partidos, lo que le han servido para ganar la Liga, Copa y Supercopa de Portugal el año anterior, con una temporada de ensueño.
Gracias al nivel mostrado con la camiseta del 'Tiburón', tanto a nivel local como internacional, Díaz ganó su primer llamado a la Selección Colombia para los duelos amistosos ante Venezuela y Argentina en 2019, debutando con la absoluta cafetera ante la Albiceleste. Jugó apenas los minutos finales pero dejó una grata impresión. Volvió a la Tricolor de la mano de Carlos Queiroz y en su primer partido de titular la rompió, demostrando su magia y pegada ante Corea del Sur .
Cabe resaltar que un futbolista guajiro no marcaba con la Selección desde hace casi tres décadas. El último en lograrlo fue el inolvidable Arnoldo Iguarán, máximo artillero de la Tricolor con 25 tantos hasta que lo superó Radamel Falcao.
La Copa América 2021 marcó la revelación total de 'Lucho' Díaz con la camiseta amarilla. De la mano de Reinaldo Rueda, Díaz se consagró con un torneo que rayó en la perfección. Cuatro goles -golazos ante Brasil, Argentina y Perú- para llevar a Colombia hasta el tercer lugar de la competencia y dejar su nombre sonando fuerte en el fútbol mundial que durante varias semanas centró su atención en el Wayúu de oro.
