Con el 10, a la victoria ante Ecuador (3-0), a las semifinales de la Copa América. Lo que era un partido apretado lo transformó el genio en una goleada. Fue clave el fenómeno con dos participaciones decisivas para romper el empate. Es que primero habilitó a Nicolás González para que se fuese mano a mano con Galíndez, quien salió rápido y despejó a un costado. Hubo acción en las dos áreas. Argentina, con el peso de su jerarquía individual, fue más hiriente. Hubo un remate desviado de Pezzella tras un córner. Dos veces Lautaro Martínez estuvo cerca, pero primero Galíndez y luego Arboleda en la línea lo dejaron sin gol. También el arquero le tapó dos veces el segundo a Nicolás González, luego de un tiro libre exacto de Messi.
Ecuador apostaba a profundizar por los laterales para terminar con centros intimidantes. Así en dos ocasiones Enner Valencia quedó a casi nada de festejar, pero en ninguno pudo conectar de cabeza con precisión. Además, hubo un disparo desde afuera de Jhegson Méndez que sirvió para verificar la imponente actualidad del arquero Emiliano Martínez.
La peligrosa costumbre de resignar protagonismo en los segundos tiempos la repitió Argentina con Ecuador, que pasó a controlar el juego, aunque sin molestar demasiado. Los demorados cambios de Scaloni llegaron a los 25 minutos. Afuera Paredes y Lo Celso. Adentro Guido Rodríguez (para armar un doble 5 con De Paul) y Di María, quien sería vital.
Esas modificaciones le permitieron a Argentina presionar más arriba, donde se le facilita la recuperación. Así Di María forzó un error ecuatoriano en la salida, Messi la capturó y asistió a Lautaro, quien resolvió arriba. Pero faltaba lo mejor. La corrida de Di María, la falta que era penal pero el árbitro cambió por tiro libre y la ejecución fabulosa de Messi. Ahora al genio sólo le falta un gol para alcanzar a Pelé como el máximo goleador de selecciones en Sudamérica. Seguro que O’Rei está temblando.
