Los goles fuera de casa ya no valdrán doble en caso de empate en una eliminatoria de competición UEFA. Así lo ha anunciado el organismo futbolístico en un comunicado en el que especifica que esta regla no tendrá valor desde la temporada 2021-22.
Esta regla, que entró en vigor en 1965, ha sido un tema de debate en reuniones UEFA en las últimas fechas, y como han reconocido en el comunicado, "la cuestión de su supresión se ha debatido en varias reuniones de la UEFA en los últimos años. Aunque no ha habido unanimidad de opiniones, muchos entrenadores, aficionados y otras partes interesadas en el fútbol han cuestionado su justicia y han expresado su preferencia por la abolición de la regla".

Finalmente, y a partir de la próxima temporada, aquellas eliminatorias en las que ambos equipos finalicen los 180 minutos con el mismo número de goles, independientemente de dónde los hayan marcado, deberán disputar una prórroga de 30 minutos y, si no se rompe la igualdad, decidir la clasificación en la tanda de penaltis.
"Las estadísticas desde mediados de la década de 1970 hasta ahora muestran una clara tendencia a la reducción continua de la diferencia entre el número de victorias en casa y a domicilio (del 61%/19% al 47%/30%) y la media de goles por partido marcados en casa y fuera (del 2,02/0,95 al 1,58/1,15) en las competiciones masculinas, mientras que desde la 2009/10, la media de goles por partido se ha mantenido muy estable en la UEFA Women's Champions League, con un promedio general de 1,92 para los equipos locales y 1,6 para los visitantes", cita el comunicado de la UEFA para justificar la decisión.

El presidente de la UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin, ha querido explicar y argumentar la decisión de suprimir esta regla con unas palabras reproducidas en la web de la UEFA.
"Es justo decir que la ventaja de jugar en casa ya no es tan importante como antes. El impacto de la regla va ahora en contra de su propósito original, ya que, de hecho, ahora disuade a los equipos locales, especialmente en los partidos de ida, de atacar, porque temen encajar un gol que daría a sus rivales una ventaja crucial. También se critica la injusticia, especialmente en la prórroga, de obligar al equipo local a marcar dos veces cuando el equipo visitante ha marcado", comenta.
