El seleccionador blanquirrojo convocó a Santiago Ormeño, delantero mexicano nacionalizado peruano
La selección peruana jugará la Copa América con un ataque renovado tras quedar fuera de la lista de convocados los delanteros Paolo Guerrero (Internacional), Jefferson Farfán (Alianza Lima), Raúl Ruidíaz (Seattle Sounders) y Edison Flores (DC United).
En su lugar, el seleccionador de Perú, Ricardo Gareca, ha convocado por primera vez al delantero mexicano nacionalizado peruano Santiago Ormeño, que marcó 17 goles en 36 partidos de la liga mexicana con la camiseta del Puebla.
El flamante fichaje del León seguirá así los pasos de su abuelo, Walter Ormeño, portero que disputó la Copa América de 1949 con la selección peruana.
Junto a Ormeño también han sido convocados Gianluca Lapadula (Benevento), uno de los mejores de Perú con dos asistencias en el reciente triunfo ante Ecuador (1-2), y los jóvenes Álex Valera (Universitario) y Luis Iberico (Melgar), que ya han tenido buenas actuaciones en Copa Libertadores y Copa Sudamericana.
Este cambio casi en bloque de la delantera de la Blanquirroja viene motivado el bajo momento de forma que atraviesan especialmente Guerrero, Farfán y Flores.
Guerrero, capitán y máximo goleador histórico de la selección, aún no logra a sus 37 años recuperar ritmo de competición tras sufrir una tendinitis en la rodilla que le tuvo seis meses inactivo recientemente por una rotura del ligamento anterior cruzado.
Asimismo, Farfán, de 36 años, continúa con problemas en la rodilla que ya lo obligó a pasar por quirófano a finales del año pasado, mientras que Flores sufrió una lesión muscular que le hizo perderse los dos partidos de eliminatorias frente a Colombia y Ecuador.
Al igual que ya ocurrió con la Copa América Centenario de 2016, Gareca ha aprovechado esta edición especial del torneo sudamericano para convocar a jugadores poco habituales con la idea de integrarlos al combinado nacional.
Tanto en esa ocasión como ahora, la selección peruana afronta el torneo tras un mal inicio de las eliminatorias sudamericanas de clasificación para el Mundial y con la necesidad de encontrar nuevas soluciones que mejoren el rendimiento del equipo.
Así se explica también la presencia en la lista de Jhilmar Lora (Sporting Cristal) en lugar de Luis Advíncula (Rayo Vallecano), de Marcos López (San José Earthquakes) en vez de Nilson Loyola (Sporting Cristal) y también la inclusión de Renzo Garcés (Sporting Cristal) en detrimento de Carlos Zambrano (Boca Juniors).
En la medular destaca la convocatoria de Martín Távara (Sporting Cristal) en lugar de Pedro Aquino (América-MEX) después haya sido uno de los futbolistas más destacados de su equipo en la Copa Libertadores.
