La selección de fútbol de Panamá celebra por todo lo alto su victoria más abultada de la historia: 0-13 ante Anguila, en partido correspondiente al Grupo D de las eliminatorias de la CONCACAF para el Mundial de Qatar 2022.
La débil selección isleña, que representa un territorio británico en el Caribe oriental, llegaba ya sin posibilidades, pues perdió todos sus encuentros anteriores del grupo. Panamá, dirigida desde el banquillo por el exbarcelonista y exinternacional con la absoluta de España Thomas Christiansen, confirmó su condición de favorito del grupo con una goleada aplastante.
El Estadio Nacional Rod Carew de Panamá fue escenario de un enfrentamiento con una insultante superioridad del cuadro local. Su anterior gran goleada fue un 12-1 sobre Puerto Rico en 1946, concretamente en unos Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe en Barranquilla (Colombia)
El primer gol y el segundo del encuentro los hizo Armando Cooper en los minutos 7 y 18. De ahí en adelante todo fue un festival anotador, con Francisco Antonio Palacios poniendo el 0-13 en el 90’. Gabriel Torres, delantero de los Pumas de México, fue la figura del encuentro con cuatro dianas (minutos 35 pen., 54, 71 y 84 pen.) que le endosó al veterano guardameta Darius Lantan (42 años). El resto de goleadores fueron Cecilio Waterman (51’), Jorman Aguilar (32’), Miguel Camargo (58’), Jair Catuy (73’) y Alberto Quintero (85’). A ellos se sumó un autogol de Tafari Smith (48’).
El siguiente partido de Panamá será el próximo martes contra la República Dominicana, que viene de empatar a un tanto con Barbados y que se encuentra en segundo lugar del grupo D con 7 puntos. Un empate le basta a los de Thomas Christiansen para asegurar el primer lugar y pasar a la siguiente ronda. Cabe recordar que el técnico hispano-danés (48 años) fue jugador, entre otros, del Barça B, Sporting, Osasuna, Racing de Santander, Real Oviedo, Villarreal y Terrassa.
