Ricardo Rivera anotó dos goles y Puerto Rico vapuleó este miércoles a Bahamas por 7-0 en el tercer partido del Grupo F de las eliminatorias de la Concacaf para el Mundial de Catar jugado en el Estadio Centroamericano José Figueroa Freyre de Mayagüez.
Fue el primer evento deportivo profesional en la isla con público en medio de la covid-19 y la primera victoria de Puerto Rico, que antes había igualado un partido y perdido el otro. Trinidad y Tobago tiene también cuatro puntos pero en dos partidos, en tanto que Guyana acumula tres, producto de una victoria y una derrota en el Grupo F. Bahamas, por su parte, continúa en el último puesto sin puntos y con tres derrotas. El Grupo F lo domina San Cristóbal y Nieves con seis puntos en igual número de salidas, lo que lo aproxima a la siguiente ronda.
Puerto Rico, que contó con el debut en la selección del defensa Zarek Valentín, del Dynamo de Houston en la MLS, arrancó agresivo el partido, dando así espacio a que Gerald Rivera marcara el primer gol en el tercer minuto ante el arquero Ian Lowe, logrando vítores de los 1.115 aficionados que acudieron al estadio.
Diez minutos más tarde, Ricardo Rivera anotó el primero de sus dos goles para poner el ampliar la ventaja puertorriqueña 2-0. La tercera anotación de la selección boricua vino de parte de Isaac Angking en el minuto 31. Y cuando se pensaba que la ofensiva se detendría en el descanso, Ricardo Rivera recibió un empujón de Williams Jaelin en el área, obteniendo un penal, el cual lanzó en el minuto 43 para expandir el marcador 4-0 e irse al descanso con una cómoda ventaja.
Luego, en el minuto 62, Devin Vega quiso unirse a la fiesta de goles y anotar el quinto para la escuadra puertorriqueña. En el minuto 64, el técnico de Puerto Rico, el estadounidense Dave Sarachan decidió hacer un triple cambio, entre ellos, el de Jaden Servania por Vega. Servania, a su vez, entró al campo con hambre y a los dos minutos de entrar, marcó el sexto tanto de la plantilla caribeña.
Finalmente, Lester Hayes, quien también entró al partido en el triple cambio del minuto 64, atizó tras un tiro de esquina del capitán Nicolás Cardona el séptimo gol del ‘Huracán Azul’, mote con el que se le conoce a Puerto Rico.
Fue la tercera victoria de Puerto Rico sobre Bahamas.
Las otras dos ocasiones fueron en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe 1970 y 1982 con victorias 3-0 y 4-1.
El próximo encuentro de Bahamas será el 5 de junio cuando reciba a Trinidad y Tobago, mientras que el de Puerto Rico será el 8 de junio ante Guyana en San Cristóbal y Nieves.
