El argentino Fede Fernández, de 32 años, es uno de los deseos de Manuel Pellegrini para dotar de más experiencia y contundencia a su defensa. Termina contrato en el Newcastle este verano y en Heliópolis gusta su perfil de cara a dar un salto cualitativo en esta demarcación. No será una tarea sencilla: tiene opciones de alargar un año más su contrato con el Newcastle y también hay otros clubes pendientes de lo que pueda acontecer con su futuro. El otro zaguero que tantea es Fabián Balbuena, de 29 años e internacional con Paraguay, que también está en cierre de contrato en el West Ham y cumple con un perfil semejante a lo que desea Manuel Pellegrini.

También es la fortaleza física el gran argumento de Balbuena, que participó esta campaña en 19 partidos con el West Ham.
No son los únicos nombres que se tratan en la dirección deportiva en estos días para reforzar el centro de la zaga. Víctor Chust, jugador del Castilla que esta campaña jugó tres partidos con el primer equipo del Real Madrid, es una vía que se contempla para la defensa, aunque en este caso la intención es que pueda ser el cuarto o quinto central de la plantilla. Según Mundo Deportivo, ya se produjeron contactos con el jugador, aunque su futuro aún está en el aire. La realidad de la defensa verdiblanca mantiene varias incógnitas y no se descarta tampoco el escenario de entregar protagonismo a algún canterano, aunque siempre incluyendo antes la llegada de un futbolista más contrastado.
