Manchester City, Ferran Soriano, se disculpó con la afición por la “decepción,
frustración y angustia” provocada por la participación del club en la Superliga
europea.
El City fue el primero de los
12 fundadores en retirarse oficialmente de la competición el martes en medio de
una tormenta de protestas de aficionados, jugadores y el gobierno británico, y
los otros cinco clubes ingleses lo siguieron rápidamente.
El presidente de la Juventus,
Andrea Agnelli, dijo el miércoles que la Superliga ya no podía seguir adelante
después de la retirada de los clubes ingleses, pero el presidente del Real
Madrid, Florentino Pérez, insistió en que el proyecto no estaba muerto.
“Lamento que haya tomado un
poco de tiempo, pero las circunstancias han sido algo excepcionales”, dijo
Soriano a los medios británicos en una carta a sus seguidores. “Cuando tomamos
decisiones, lo hacemos con las mejores intenciones para el club. Sin embargo,
al tomar esa decisión, no recordamos el vínculo inquebrantable entre la pasión
de nuestros hinchas y el derecho a tener la oportunidad de lograr el éxito”.
“La directiva lamenta
profundamente haber tomado una decisión que perdió de vista los valores
históricos del club. Cometimos un error y nos disculpamos sinceramente por la
decepción, frustración y angustia provocada por las últimas 72 horas”.
Soriano dijo que los
propietarios, el presidente, la junta directiva y el personal del club estaban
comprometidos con garantizar el bienestar de las pirámides del fútbol inglés y
europeo. “Aprovecharemos la oportunidad de recuperar la plena confianza de las
partes interesadas y de la familia del fútbol en general”, agregó.
