Tener demasiado ego en el mundo del fútbol es un arma de doble filo. Si eres Cristiano Ronaldo, Mourinho o Ibrahimovic se te perdonan todos tus pecados. Han ganado tanto con su carácter que se les valora su amor propio como una cualidad que les hace ser mejores que el resto. Pero para eso hay que ser muy bueno, excesivamente bueno. Puede que ese haya sido el problema de Matteo Guendouzi (Poissy, Francia, 1999) en el Arsenal. Ser bueno, pero no tanto. Elegido entre los diez mejores jugadores jóvenes del 2019, el mediocentro francés se vio apartado del equipo por Arteta, con el que chocó desde el inicio, hasta el punto que tuvo que buscarse en octubre una cesión al Hertha Berlín y, según aseguraron los medios británicos, no fue sólo por una cuestión deportiva.
Mickael Landreau, extécnico de Guendouzi en el Lorient, ha confirmado en repetidas ocasiones el difícil carácter del mediocentro. "Tiene un ego sobredimensionado, es muy complicado de manejar", aseguró en una entrevista a Canal+ Francia hace unos meses, tras la marcha del jugador a Berlín. Con estos antecedentes, muchos eran los que auguraban que la prometedora carrera de Guendouzi terminaría como la de tantos juguetes rotos, sin garantías ni segundas oportunidades.
Y es que además, los primeros pasos del centrocampista en el Hertha fueron complicados. No pudo debutar hasta la sexta jornada por culpa del COVID-19 y en sus primeros partidos se mostró dubitativo. Pero Guendouzi le ha dado la vuelta a la situación. Igual ha sido su 'sobredimensionado ego' el que le ha convertido en uno de los jugadores más en forma de la Bundesliga, pero el caso es que son muchas las voces de aficionados del Arsenal que piden su regreso en enero.
Tras liderar la victoria de su equipo y marcar un golazo ante el Schalke el pasado fin de semana (su segundo en el Hertha y su tercer como profesional), Guendouzi tuiteó una foto de su celebración en la que le dedicaba el gol a su mujer. A las pocas horas, había cientos de respuestas de aficionados gunners pidiendo su regreso en esta ventana de fichajes.

En principio, parece que Arteta descarta la posibilidad de su vuelta. Es más, en el Hertha saben que la situación entre técnico y jugador parece irreconciliable y creen viable ejercer la opción de compra sobre el futbolista. "Su contrato con el Arsenal acabará en junio de 2022 y solamente hay dos opciones, que son prolongar con los ingleses o saber si nos los venden", afirmó Michael Preetz, mánager general del Hertha. Todo puede pasar hasta el 31 de enero, pero de momento, lo que sí es seguro es que Guendouzi vuelve a sentirse futbolista, uno con todo el futuro por delante.
