La lesión que William Carvalho sufrió el pasado domingo en la vista al estadio de Los Cármenes, en Granada, y que le mantendrá un mes aproximadamente alejado de los terrenos de juego no parece haber frenado el interés del Benfica en su fichaje. Un deseo que viene de lejos y que el club lisboeta, a petición de su técnico, Jorge Jesus, principal interesado en el futbolista, espera cumplir en el mercado invernal que arranca el próximo viernes.
El Benfica ya quiso al internacional portugués el pasado verano, aunque su interés no se plasmó en una oferta satisfactoria para el Betis. Se encontró además con las dificultades que Manuel Pellegrini puso para desprenderse del futbolista, en el que tenía depositadas muchas esperanzas. Pero la situación parece haber cambiado en los primeros meses de competición, tal y como desvela hoy en su portada el diario portugués Record.
William, que comenzó como titular por la lesión de Guardado y pareció recuperado para la causa verdiblanca con dos goles en las primeras jornadas, ha ido perdiendo peso en el equipo con el paso de las semanas y sólo las numerosas bajas en la medular le han permitido seguir jugando con asiduidad. Su rendimiento ha estado muy por debajo del esperado, lejos de la importantísima inversión que el Betis realizó en 2018 para hacerse con su fichaje.
Una elevada inversión
Los verdiblancos pagaron 16 millones de euros más cuatro en variables por el 75% del pase del futbolista, con opciones para ir ampliando su porcentaje en función de distintos objetivos. Pero William no ha terminado de cuajar en el Betis, que con su compleja situación económica actual, ve en el internacional portugués una posible fuente de ingresos sin causar un importante perjuicio deportivo al equipo con su eventual marcha (Canales, a punto de regresar, y Camarasa, al que se espera en febrero, cubrirían su puesto).
El Betis ha tasado al jugador en 20 millones, aunque probablemente aceptaría un traspaso por una cantidad algo menor, recuperando la mayor parte de su inversión. El problema para el Benfica estaría además en el elevado salario del futbolista. Así, el club lisboeta tiene en su agenda la alternativa de Willian Arao, del Flamengo, más económica que Carvalho, pero sin experiencia en el fútbol europeo pese a tener la misma edad que el centrocampista bético, 28 años.
