Steven Gerrard, legendario
capitán del Liverpool, inició su carrera como entrenador profesional en junio
de 2018. El histórico Rangers de Glasgow contrató al excentrocampista inglés,
pese a no tener ninguna experiencia como técnico al máximo nivel, para acabar
con la insultante hegemonía del eterno rival Celtic, que ha ganado las últimas
nueve ediciones de la Premier League escocesa.
En la temporada 2018-19 el
Rangers acabó segundo a 9 puntos del Celtic y en la pasada repitió
clasificación final, aunque aún quedó más lejos (13 puntos) del campeón. En el
actual curso Gerrard va camino de llevar por fin a Ibrox Park el primer título
liguero desde 2011.
El Rangers lidera la Premier
escocesa tras 15 jornadas disputadas con 41 puntos. Se mantiene invicto y solo
ha cedido dos empates desde el inicio de campeonato. Y lo que es más
importante, saca 13 puntos de ventaja al Celtic, aunque éste, dirigido por el
ahora cuestionado Neil Lennon, tiene dos partidos pendientes por jugar.

prolongado su extraordinaria trayectoria con su goleada en el terreno del Ross
County (0-4) y ya encadena ocho jornadas seguidas ganando. Además, las últimas
7 sin encajar un solo gol y con la friolera de 23 a favor.
Por contra, el Celtic, al que
el Rangers derrotó el 17 de octubre por 0-2, empató en casa ante el Saint
Johnstone (1-1) y solo ha logrado un triunfo en las últimas cinco jornadas.
Invicto también y ya
clasificado en la Europa League
El Rangers no solo arrolla en
la Premier escocesa. Gerrard logró el pasado jueves clasificarle para los 1/16
de final de la Europa League tras remontar al Standard Lieja (3-2) y este
jueves visitará al Lech Poznan en la última jornada de la fase de grupos con el
objetivo de mantener el primer lugar de la liguilla que comparte con el
Benfica.
Si gana o empata, el Rangers
acabará invicto ya que ha vencido tres e igualado dos en los cinco encuentros
disputados. En la fase previa, el equipo de Gerrard superó tres eliminatorias a
partido único tras imponerse fuera de casa al Lincoln Red Imps de Gibraltar
(0-5) y al Willem II neerlandés (0-4) y en casa al Galatasaray turco (2-1).
