Caoimhin Kelleher, que aún no
ha debutado en Premier, clave en el pase del Liverpool a octavos de Champions
como primero de grupo
Klopp afirmó que fue difícil
no alinear a Adrián “pero necesitábamos un portero como Caoimhin para la
presión del Ajax”
La corte del Liverpool de
Jürgen Klopp ya tiene un héroe irlandés: su joven portero Caoimhin Kelleher,
crucial con sus intervenciones para que el equipo ‘red’ derrotara el martes al
Ajax y se clasificara para octavos de Champions como primero de grupo (1-0).
Klopp sorprendió al incluir en el once titular a Kelleher, de 22 años y que aún
no ha debutado en Premier, ante los ‘ajacied’ en lugar de Adrián San Miguel,
hasta ahora segundo guardameta de los ‘reds’ tras Alisson Becker, quien se
encuentra lesionado.
Klopp fue claro sobre la
elección de Kelleher, portero internacional Sub-21 por Irlanda: “Necesitábamos
un portero como Caoimhin para la presión del Ajax. Lo hizo muy bien, pero al
final todo se resume en parar y mantener la pelota lejos de la portería y lo
hizo sensacional en dos ocasiones. Fue difícil quitar a Adrián porque lo ha
hecho muy bien durante estas temporadas”.
Kelleher estuvo providencial
contra el Ajax al parar un disparo de Noussair Mazraoui y un remate de cabeza
de Klaas Jan Huntelaar. Hasta el martes el portero de Cork aún no había jugado
ni un partido esta temporada con el primer equipo ‘red’ (en la pasada, disputó
con el Liverpool tres encuentros de Copa de la Liga y uno de FA Cup). Kelleher
estuvo a punto incluso de marcharse en verano cedido a un equipo de la
Eredivisie porque quería jugar. Pero la lesión de Alisson (la anterior a la actual)
lo impidió.
Que Klopp no alineara a Adrián
contra el Ajax fue una sorpresa para muchos. Lo cierto es que de inmediato el
portero sevillano mostró su apoyo a su joven compañero. “Me dijo: ‘Estoy
contigo al 100 por ciento y te apoyaré pase lo que pase’. Sus palabras y los
consejos que me dio supusieron un gran apoyo para mí en esos momentos”,
manifestó Kelleher en referencia a Adrián. El cancerbero irlandés explicó que
“Alisson me envió un mensaje deseándome suerte”.
Kelleher se incorporó a las
categorías inferiores del Liverpool en 2005 procedente del Ringmahon Rangers,
de su Irlanda natal. Uno de sus hermanos, Fiacre Kelleher, juega en el Wrexham
galés (que milita en la Quinta División inglesa y militó en el Celtic.
Kelleher fue el tercer portero
del Liverpool en las dos últimas temporadas y estuvo en el banquillo en la
final de la Champions ganada al Tottenham en 2019. John Achterberg, preparador
de guardametas del Liverpool, dijo en octubre “no es bueno para Caoimhin no
jugar, pero el entrenador (Klopp) tiene mucha fe en él”. Y efectivamente ante
el Ajax el técnico alemán apostó por el portero irlandés.
