Callum Wilson, delantero del Newcastle, ha sido uno de los grandes nombres propios de la jornada internacional con sus dos goles al Everton.
Se dice que hay partidos que se ganan por pequeños detalles. El que declinó la balanza a favor del Newcastle el pasado domingo ante el Everton (2-1) no ocurrió durante el partido en St. James Park, sino 15 años atrás. Si Callum Wilson hubiera decidido continuar su prometedora carrera como kickboxer en vez de abandonarla para centrarse en el fútbol, probablemente el equipo de Ancelotti seguiría en esa nube en la que vivía como líder absoluto de la Premier. Pero Callum, con sus dos goles, despertó a los toffees de su sueño. "Cuando tenía 14 años tuve tres combates y gané los tres por KO técnico, era fácil, sólo había que hacer llorar a los rivales", asegura el delantero, que sigue provocando alguna lagrimilla a sus contrincantes por sus patadas, aunque ahora se las dé al balón.
La decisión de dejar el kickboxing y centrarse en el fútbol se basó en una cuestión económica más que pasional. Cuando Callum Wilson apenas era un bebé, su padre abandonó a su madre y esta cuidó de él y de sus otros cuatro hermanos en solitario. Cuando el delantero creció y llegó a la adolescencia, no pensó en qué deporte se le daba mejor, sino en cuál ganaría más dinero. "Había que ayudar en casa. Iba a los entrenamientos y a los gimnasios y veía muchos tipos cuarentones que se mataban a trabajar y dedicaban su tiempo libre a la lucha y no quería ser uno de esos, por eso me esforcé para ser jugador profesional y así ayudar de la mejor manera a mi madre", ha relatado el internacional inglés, por el que este año el Newcastle pagó 22 millones de euros al Bournemouth.
Le costó llegar a la cima. Se formó en las categorías inferiores del Coventry, de la League One y no llegó a la Premier hasta cumplir los 22 años. El Bournemouth se fijó en sus 21 goles en la Tercera División inglesa en las termporada 2013-14 y apostó por un chico al que se le escapaban los trenes de hacer algo grande. Ya en el Bournemouth explotó: 67 goles y 30 asistencias en 187 partidos. Sus actuaciones le abrieron la puerta de la selección y el interés de los grandes clubes. Mourinho lo quiso este verano para acompañar a Kane en el Tottenham, pero la falta de solvencia de los spurs impidió que el conjunto londinense pudiera igualar la oferta del Newcastle, donde lleva seis goles y una asistencia en ocho partidos. Puede que el kickboxing perdiera una promesa pero el fútbol ganó una realidad.
