mando del Cruzeiro con la misión de evitar que el tradicional club de Belo
Horizonte pueda caer a la Tercera División.
La contratación de
Scolari fue anunciada por la dirección del club azul, que el año pasado
descendió a la Segunda División y actualmente corre el riesgo de caer a
Tercera, ya que es el penúltimo en la clasificación.
'Felipao', como es
popularmente conocido, había rechazado inicialmente la propuesta para asumir en
el Cruzeiro, pero finalmente la aceptó después de que el club le ofreciera
contrato hasta diciembre de 2022 y a que un patrocinador se comprometiera a
pagarle los salarios.
"No quería comandar
el equipo tan solo este año. Quería este año que está terminando y seguir en
2021, 2022 y 2023. Voy a estar con ustedes dando todo lo que pueda y a
contribuir con mi conocimiento a todo aquello que el Cruzeiro también me
dio", afirmó el técnico en un video publicado por el club en sus redes
sociales y al referirse a su anterior pasaje, hace casi 20 años, en 2000 y
2001.

El nuevo técnico, que
estaba sin club desde que fue despedido el año pasado del Palmeiras, comandó el
Cruzeiro durante 75 partidos en 2000 y 2001 con un balance de 40 victorias, 23
empates y 12 derrotas, pero con apenas un título: la Copa Sul-Minas en 2001.
Scolari sustituirá a Ney
Franco, destituido el pasado domingo tras un nuevo revés del Cruzeiro en la
disputa del Campeonato Brasileño de Segunda División.
La nueva derrota hundió
al equipo a la penúltima posición en la clasificación, con 12 puntos en 16
partidos jugados. Según los matemáticos, la posibilidad de un nuevo y
humillante descenso es del 52,5 % y la de un regreso a la primera división es
del 1,1 %.
Scolari será el cuarto
entrenador del Cruzeiro este año tras Franco, Adilson Batista y Enderson
Moreira. Los anteriores fueron despedidos por la precoz eliminación del equipo
tanto del Campeonato Mineiro como de la Copa do Brasil.
El Cruzeiro, uno de los
clubes más tradicionales de Brasil, suma 20 títulos, entre los cuales están dos
de la Copa Libertadores, cuatro del Campeonato Brasileño de primera división y
seis de la Copa do Brasil.
Hasta el año pasado era
uno de los cuatro clubes brasileños que nunca había descendido a la segunda
división.
