FC Barcelona Nunca antes el equipo había contado con jugadores estadounidenses.
En casi 121 años ninguno... y dos de repente. Konrad de la Fuente y Sergiño Dest son los dos primeros estadounidenses del Fútbol Club Barcelona, una nacionalidad nunca antes representada en la plantilla azulgrana. Dos amigos, además, que se conocen de las categorías inferiores de EE.UU. (el primero es de 2001, el segundo de 2000) y que como es lógico cruzaron unos cuantos mensajes antes de que Dest recalara en Can Barça.
Inseparables desde la llegada del lateral, instalado Konrad como jugador del primer equipo aunque esté inscrito con el filial y aún no haya debutado, Dest le arrebató el honor de ser el primer jugador de nacionalidad estadounidense en disputar un partido oficial con el Barça (frente al Sevilla). Konrad lo tenía a tiro, habiendo disputado, eso sí, amistosos previamente.
La historia de ambos con Estados Unidos tiene recorrido. La de Dest viene de su padre, que nació en Surinam, una colonia holandesa al norte de Brasil, pero siendo pequeño se mudó a Nueva York con sus padres. Allí creció y se hizo soldado. Pasó por distintos países hasta que en Holanda encontró a la que ahora es madre de Sergiño, que también tiene raíces surinamesas. Lleva 25 años en Almere, donde hace 19 nació Dest. El padre fue decisivo para que Sergiño eligiera representar a Estados Unidos en vez de a Holanda, a pesar de que Koeman trató de convencerle personal e insistentemente. En noviembre debutó con la absoluta.
El caso de Konrad es distinto, porque él sí nació en suelo estadounidense, concretamente en Miami. Su padre y su madre son haitianos y el primero diplomático, una profesión que primero le llevó a Florida y después a Barcelona, donde el pequeño De la Fuente llegó con 10 años. A los 12 entró en La Masía. Y hasta hoy, con un recorrido que se asemeja a su fútbol, vertiginoso. Juvenil el curso pasado, unos meses en el B y ya en dinámica de primer equipo con un Koeman al que le ha entrado por el ojo. Su debut con la absoluta de USA está próximo.

En el departamento de márketing del Barça están muy contentos de contar con dos jóvenes talentos estadounidenses con un potencial comercial inexplorado hasta ahora en el club catalán, cuya penetración en el mercado USA se puede ver ampliada próximamente. Dest ya ha visto lo que supone ser jugador del Barça. Subió de 200.000 a casi 800.000 seguidores en Instagram. La propia federación de fútbol estadounidense se ha volcado en sus canales con el fichaje. Una pareja de talentos de futuro que hará que los aficionados al fútbol en Estados Unidos miren con más interés al Camp Nou.
