Los ‘rossoneri’, sin Ibra tras dar positivo de Covid-19, evitaron el KO en el minuto final de la prórroga gracias a un penalti de Çalhanoglu.
El Milan sufrió lo indecible para acceder a la fase de grupos de la Europa League tras eliminar al Río Ave en una dramática e interminable tanda de penaltis que precisó de hasta 24 lanzamientos (8-9). Al final de los 90 minutos se llegó con 1-1 y los ‘rossoneri’, sin Zlatan Ibrahimovic tras dar positivo de Covid-19 y con Daniel Maldini de titular en su lugar con apenas 18 años, forzaron la tanda en el último segundo de la prórroga (2-2).
La primera parte en Vila do Conde fue poco vistoso, ya que el juego transcurrió mayoritariamente en el centro del campo y ambos equipos concedieron pocos espacios a su rival, por lo que las ocasiones fueron contadas. De hecho solo cabe contabilizar un disparo bien dirigido, ya en el minuto 40, por parte de Carlo Mané, tras pérdida de Theo Hernandez, que no sorprendió a Gianluigi Donnarumma.
El Milan abre el marcador
En el descanso Stefano PIoli dejó en la caseta a Samu Castillejo y dio entrada a Brahim Díaz. El jugador cedido por el Real Madrid fraguó el 0-1 al provocar un córner que acabó en gol, tras el rechace defensivo, gracias a un soberbio disparo por la escuadra del joven belga Alexis Saelemaekers (50’).
El Milan, sin alardes, parecía tener controlado el partido ante un Río Ave que no dio síntomas de reacción, pero en su primera ocasión clara. La jugada se inició en el lanzamiento de puerta del portero y la concluyó Chico Geraldes, que acababa de entrar, con un potente y preciso remate a pase de Lucas Piazon (70’).
El Milan buscó el gol e intentó evitar la prórroga pero sus intentos se estrellaron en la firme defensa portuguesa. Solo Hakan Çalhanoglu acarició el 1-2 en el minuto 84 con un disparo que, tras desviarlo un rival, salió rozando el poste.
El Río Ave inicia la prórroga con el 2-1
Ya en la prórroga, el Río Ave solo tardó un minuto en asestar al Milan un duro golpe. Mario Silva volvió a acertar en el cambio ya que el angoleño Gelson Dala, a quien dio entrada poco antes del final del tiempo reglamentario, aprovechó su rapidez para superar un impotente Donnarumma.
El MIlan volvió a volcarse a la desesperada y, tras dos claras ocasiones falladas por Theo Hernandez y Sandro Tonali, una mano de Toni Borevkovic, que vio la segunda amarilla, le salvó ya que el árbitro decretó penalti y Çalhanoglu forzó la tanda en el último minuto de la prórroga.
Tanda interminable
Fueron necesarios 24 lanzamientos para decidir la eliminatoria. Los 14 primeros se convirtieron, pero posteriormente los dos porteros fallaron hasta que Kjaer materializó el segundo que tiró y Donnarumma detuvo el decisivo a Santos.
