El portero argentino lleva una década esperando su gran oportunidad con el Arsenal tras múltiples cesiones. Su final de temporada fue excelente.
Emiliano Martínez (Mar de Plata, 1992) se hizo famoso en este verano por las conmovedoras imágenes tras ganar la FA Cup ante el Chelsea y por las increíbles actuaciones que tuvo con el Arsenal tras la baja de Leno. Dibu ha esperado durante una década su oportunidad con el cuadro inglés, pasando por seis cesiones, y ahora cree que ha llegado su momento. Quiere jugar en el Emirates, si es posible, o en otro club, pero sin préstamos. Y quiere la camiseta de Argentina.
¿Este año ha sido el mejor de su vida?
Sí... A la gente le gustó mi historia, le conmovió ver todo lo que me costó llegar tan alto y muchos quisieron hablar conmigo, conocerme. Lo hice bastante durante las vacaciones, también para que los chicos entiendan que no es fácil concretar tus sueños.
¿Volvió a ver las imágenes de la final con el Chelsea?
No. Me fui directo de vacaciones. Sólo sé el trabajo que hicimos en equipo para conseguir ese triunfo. Fue suficiente.
El camino para llegar a esa alegría ha sido larguísimo…
Llegué al Arsenal en 2010 y tuve que pasar por cinco préstamos, más otro jugando sólo un partido, en el Oxford. No fue fácil, la verdad. Me costó y sufrí más de lo que debía, pero hoy puedo decir que todo el esfuerzo mereció la pena.
¿Qué cesión le dejó los recuerdos más lindos?
La última, en el Reading, fue la que más disfruté. El técnico José Gomes me dio mucha confianza. Y crecí.
¿Ha pensado alguna vez en irse definitivamente a otro equipo?
Si he regresado tantas veces es porque ellos seguían confiando en que podía ser su número uno. Si me hubiesen dicho 'mira, no tienes futuro aquí', yo me habría ido a otro club. Ahora se cumplió lo que deseaba, y espero seguir triunfando en el Arsenal.
La lesión de Leno le ha cambiado la carrera…
Sí, también otros grandes porteros, como Casillas, tuvieron su gran oportunidad porque se lesionó el que estaba jugando. Uno tiene que estar preparado.
¿Con qué momento se queda de los últimos meses?
Hay dos. El primer partido que jugué como titular en la Premier, contra el Southampton, en el minuto 84 hice una parada importante, que nos ayudó para llevarnos el triunfo y dejar la portería a cero. Me dio confianza. El otro, fue en el 94' contra el Liverpool, cuando neutralicé un gran disparo de Alexander-Arnold y nos llevamos la victoria.
La videollamada con su familia dio la vuelta al mundo...
En realidad, solo llorábamos. Sus lágrimas eran las mías. Yo estaba celebrando el triunfo y mi mujer me dijo: 'llámalos, están llorando'. Me fui afuera, que en el vestuario había mucho ruido, y lo hice. Fueron sólo dos minutos, que se quedarán en mi mente para el resto de mi vida.
Tras este verano maravilloso, ha llegado el momento de tener protagonismo también con Argentina. Las eliminatorias se acercan….
Trabajo para conseguirlo, jugar con la selección es el sueño de cualquier futbolista. No sé si podré ser titular, será decisión del técnico, pero lo que sé es que quiero seguir compitiendo bien para ganarme esa oportunidad.
¿En el próximo curso le seguiremos viendo en el Arsenal?
Lo que espero, como dije, es seguir en el Arsenal. Mi idea es esa, pero obviamente quiero que sea jugando.
¿Qué sueño tiene para el resto de su carrera?
Jugar la mayor cantidad posible de partidos en la Premier League y hacerlo con mi país.
