Parecía el año. Tras un final de liga apoteósico, el Atleti encaraba los cuartos de final de Champions League sabiéndose en buena dinámica. 11 partidos sin perder, el tercer puesto asegurando en competición doméstica. Un cuadro, digamos, favorable, que alejaba a cocos como el FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City o Bayern de Múnich al otro lado del cuadro, con quien solo se cruzarían en una hipotética final. ¿El primer rival? El RB Leipzig, un anónimo en Champions League que convencía con su juego en la Bundesliga pero que había quedado a 16 puntos del Bayern de Múnich. Sólo valía ganar, como dijo el Cholo. Pero no se pudo y, de hecho, tampoco se lo merecía. 2-1 para poner fin al viaje a Lisboa, de nuevo Lisboa, antes de tiempo. Y decir adiós a la temporada.
Este duro final de campaña ha puesto a Simeone en la cuerda floja y así lo demuestran los resultados de la macroencuesta de MARCA para valorar el año colchonero. De hecho, el 86% considera que la valoración que le corresponde está entre aprobado y suspenso.

Pesos pesados como Koke, Saúl, Thomas o Morata ven el aprobado como opción más recurrente. No han estado al nivel deseado pero nadie los apunta como principales culpables. El fichaje del verano, Joao Félix, también se queda con un suficiente, aunque un preocupante 29% de votantes lo suspenderían.
Los fichajes del verano pasado, en general, tampoco se salvan de la quema. Sólo Felipe y Llorente, que se llevan un notable, superan la nota media de sus compañeros. Trippier, Hermoso, Lodi y Carrasco aprueban. Saponjic y Herrera, como hemos dicho, ni siquiera llegan al 5.
