El del Burnley
adelantó a Alisson en la victoria por 0-1 ante el West Ham. Pope pasó un verano
trabajando para comprar su primer coche y estuvo cerca de dejar el fútbol.
Nick Pope fue uno
de los jugadores más destacados del Burnley en su victoria frente al West Ham
United por 0-1. Aunque Jay Rodríguez fue el que hizo el gol de la victoria, el
portero fue clave para mantener la meta a cero. El de Soham consiguió su
decimocuarta portería a cero en lo que va de temporada y adelantó a Alisson,
cancerbero del Liverpool, como Guante de Oro de la Premier League. Hace unos
años, nada de esto parecía ni cercano ni probable.
En una entrevista
con Daily Mail, el portero explica como fueron sus inicios. Desde que le
rechazaron en la academia del Ipswich Town con 16 años y su camino por las
divisiones inferiores inglesas haciendo el fútbol compatible con sus estudios y
varios trabajos a media jornada como dependiente en Next o repartiendo leche de
madrugada en una empresa de su primo. "Fueron trabajos raros que conseguí",
reconoce y que le sirvieron para comprarse su primer coche: un Citroen C2
"de color rojo Ferrari" tal y como explica en este diario.
Cuando el Ipswich
le cortó en su academia, Pope no se rindió aunque evaluó otros caminos jugando
en el reserva del Bury Town, encadenando trabajos a media jornada y estudiando
camino a la Universidad. "Hay algo en el fondo de tu mente que te dice que
es posible pero al 90% pensaba que ya era poco probable", reconoce.
En ese momento,
un ojeador del Charlton le invitó a probar y acabó fichando por ellos y todo
empezó a correr. El club no le encontraba hueco y empezaron cesiones, cesiones

United, Aldershot Town, York City y Bury solo entre 2011 y 2015. A final de campaña en 2016, el Burnley le
compró por algo más de un millón de euros.
El sueño estaba
más cerca pero se cumplió definitivamente cuando tuvo que salir para sustituir
a Tom Heaton en un encuentro contra el Crystal Palace. "Recuerdo sacar de
puerta y quedarme un momento a respirar y pensar en ello. Me dije "Después
de todo, aquí es
donde querías estar. En un partido de la Premier League de verdad". Me
enseñaron a salir a tope y eso intenté. No esperar a que las cosas llegaran a
mi. Salir de debajo de la portería, salir a un balón que llega a mi campo.
Quería demostrar que era mi día", asegura.
Se hizo con la
portería del Burnley y ahroa, para él, conseguir el Guante de Oro sería un
premio para el colectivo más que para sus actuaciones. "Nuestro equipo no
es un grande y no está entre los seis mejores por lo general. Para nosotros,
ganarlo sería increíble, como un premio a los diez que no paran de correr como
si su vida dependiera de ello", explica.
Pope, que ha
llegado a debutar con la absoluta, tiene este premio entre ceja y ceja y
también la Eurocopa 2021, de la que quiere disfrutar desde el césped.
