A lo largo de la temporada no han faltado las versiones sobre el inconformismo de Alex Meret con la titularidad de David Ospina en el equipo, esto desde la llegada de Gennaro Gattuso al banquillo azul, al punto que el joven arquero italiano sonó para irse al Milán.
Esta versión llegó a crear toda una historia alrededor de la relación entre los dos arqueros del cuadro napolitano, una que señalaba que el trato era netamente profesional y que poco se entendían fuera de los campos de entrenamientos.
Sin embargo, La Gazzetta de Italia ha dejado muy claro que entre Ospina y Meret existe una amistad que sobrepasa la sana rivalidad que se da al momento de competir por un lugar en el terreno de juego, algo perfectamente normal en el fútbol, y que no podrá seguir siendo explotado por la prensa sensacionalista.
"Mientras que el Napoli se reunía a celebrar el título en la mitad del campo, un emocionado David Ospina cruzó el campo en medio de gritos y celebraciones, para terminar en un abrazo fundido con el joven Meret, demostrando que en el equipo de Gatusso no existen individualidades y que la amistad está por encima, incluso en las posiciones donde la competencia es intensa, pero justa".
El medio también habla del papel de Gatusso en la relación entre los jugadores:
"El entrenador fue claro desde el principio, cuando decidió presentar a Ospina como el dueño del arco, después de los errores de Meret en aquel Napoli-Inter (1-3). Explicó bien la razón para evitar las críticas al joven que vino del Udinese hace dos veranos. En lo que va de la temporada 2019/2020, Ospina ha atajado en 16 partidosmientras que Meret acumula 22 juegos, aunque la situación para cada uno cambió sustancialmente desde el relevo en el banquillo que originó la salida de Carlo Ancelotti.
