La extraordinaria irrupción de Garrincha y Pelé en el Mundial de 1958 se debió a la imposición de los jefes del vestuario a Vicente Feola, seleccionador brasileño.
Brasil no había pasado del empate ante Inglaterra en su segundo partido de la fase de grupos de la Copa del Mundo de 1958 y se jugaba todo ante la temible Unión Soviética, en el último encuentro de la primera fase. Diferentes informes técnicos y psicológicos habían desaconsejado al seleccionador carioca (Vicente Feola) la alineación de dos jovencitos que esperaban su primera oportunidad en el torneo.
Fue el día antes de jugar contra la URSS que los jefes del vestuario de la selección brasileña se reunieron con Feola para aconsejarle lo contrario a lo que decían los informes: "Queremos que jueguen los dos nuevos. Son extraordinarios", dijo el capitán. Y Feola agachó la cabeza y decidió alinearles. Y fue así, con esta especie de motín, como empezó la historia mundialista de Pelé y de Garrincha.
Y el comienzo no conoce precedentes: a los tres minutos del partido contra los soviéticos, Brasil ya había hecho un gol y lanzado dos veces a los palos (una de Pelé y otra de Garrincha). Brasil ganó aquel partido y dos semanas más tarde ganó su primer Mundial. Y aquella pareja resultó invencible: Pelé y Garrincha JAMÁS PERDIERON jugando juntos para la Seleçao (36 victorias y 4 empates en 40 partidos). De hecho Garrincha sólo sufrió una derrota con Brasil y fue en su último partido como internacional en el que Pelé no pudo jugar por culpa de una lesión (Hungría 3-1 Brasil, el 15 de julio de 1966).
Un gol único
Uno de los partidos más memorables en la historia de la Copa del Mundo se disputó el 5 de junio de 1938 en La Meinau (Estrasburgo) y enfrentó a Brasil y a Polonia. Fue el primer encuentro en el que se marcaron al menos diez goles y en él que se registró el primer póquer mundialista a cargo de Ernest Wilimowski, que hizo dos tantos en seis minutos para equilibrar un 3-1 en contra y que llevó el encuentro a la prórroga (en la que también anotó) tras marcar el 4-4 en el minuto 89.
Pero ese partido también pasó a la historia porque fue el primero (luego solo ha habido otro más) en el que dos jugadores rivales anotaron un hat-trick, ya que a los cuatro tantos de Wilimowski hay que añadir los tres que anotó Leônidas da Silva. Y de esos tres goles de la estrella brasileña, os quiero hablar del segundo porque es un caso único e irrepetible en la historia de la Copa del Mundo. En el segundo tiempo del partido empezó a llover con fuerza y el terreno se volvió casi impracticable. De hecho, en una acción en la primera parte de la prórroga, Leônidas hundió uno de sus pies en el lodo y cuando lo sacó hacia afuera destrozó la suela de su bota. Acudió rápidamente a la banda para que le arreglaran el problema, pero nadie daba con la solución y el partido no estaba para perder un jugador así como así.
El Diamante Negro, como le apodaban, decidió arreglarlo a su manera y se quitó las dos botas, la rota y la no rota, y así regresó al campo. Había tanto barro en el calzado y en las medias de los jugadores, que el árbitro Ivan Eklind no se dio cuenta de que había un hombre totalmente descalzo sobre el terreno de juego (algo prohibido expresamente por el reglamento) y fue precisamente ese futbolista, el gran Leônidas, quien hizo el primer gol del tiempo extra. Un gol que es y será, por los siglos de los siglos, el único anotado por un jugador sin botas en la historia de la Copa del Mundo. Por cierto, Brasil ganó 6-5 y pasó a cuartos de final.
