Galesa de Fútbol (FAW) anunció hoy la cancelación del campeonato liguero debido
a la pandemia de coronavirus y la proclamación como campeón, por primera vez en
su historia, del Connah’s Quay Nomads. Es el noveno país europeo que da por
terminada la competición tras Países Bajos, Francia, Bélgica, Escocia, Malta,
Chipre, Luxemburgo y Gibraltar. En cambio, la Bundesliga alemana se reanudó el
sábado y en España, Italia e Inglaterra también se están dando pasos para que
la temporada pueda llegar a su fin.
La Cymru Premier
League quedó suspendida a mediados de marzo en la jornada 26 con Connah’s Quay
Nomads en cabeza con una ventaja de cuatro puntos sobre The New Saints,
defensor del titulo y campeón en 13 ocasiones, las últimas 8 de forma
consecutiva. Las plazas de ascenso y descenso se decidirán posteriormente.
Los Nomads, con
sede en la localidad galesa de Connah’s Quay, es un club semiprofesional
fundado en 1946 como Connah’s Quay Juniors y en 1951 adoptó su actual
denominación.

“La
Junta de la FAW tomó en consideración la salud y la seguridad de todos los
involucrados en sus ligas”, argumentó en un comunicado el organismo rector del
fútbol galés para justificar su decisión de cancelar las cuatro categorías.
“Además,
la junta también consideró el impacto económico y financiero específico que
habría tenido intentar terminar la temporada durante la pandemia y consideró
que era imperativo no arriesgar la estabilidad financiera a largo plazo de las
ligas y sus clubs”.
