La Asamblea
General de la Liga Profesional de Fútbol Belga, formada por los equipos de las
dos primeras divisiones del país, decidió dar por finalizada la temporada
y proclamar campeón al Club Brujas, líder de la competición en el momento
en el que tuvo que ser suspendida.
El Waasland-Beveren,
último clasificado, descenderá de manera automática a la segunda división.
También se acordó que la temporada 2020/21 se jugará con 16 equipos, respetando
la estructura actual, pero con una versión abreviada del playoff que decide al
equipo campeón. La fórmula habitual del campeonato volverá para la edición
2021/22.
Cuando se
suspendió la temporada en la jornada 29, el Club Brujas contaba con 70
puntos, aventajando en 15 al segundo clasificado, el KAA Gante, a un solo
partido de finalizar la fase regular. Se trata del decimosexto título de liga
del equipo del oeste de Bélgica.
Durante esta
semana se había barajado la opción de que la temporada 2020/21 se disputase
con 18 equipos, dos más que el formato habitual de la competición.
La junta
directiva de la Liga Profesional de Fútbol Belga recomendó el pasado 2 de
abril dar por finalizado el campeonato sin concluir la competición a causa
de la pandemia de coronavirus.
La propuesta
provocó una fuerte crítica del presidente de la UEFA, Aleksander Ceferin,
quien advirtió de que esa medida podría poner en peligro la participación de
los equipos belgas en las competiciones europeas.
Fruto de estas
presiones, de la incertidumbre sobre la pérdida de los derechos
televisivos y de la falta de acuerdo entre los equipos de la liga, la
decisión final sobre la resolución de la liga se había pospuesto hasta en tres
ocasiones.
La resolución
del Consejo de Seguridad Nacional de Bélgica del pasado 6 de mayo
aclaró la situación, prohibiendo por decreto ministerial cualquier práctica
deportiva profesional hasta el 31 de julio.
