It’s nice but we wanted more – Stevenage boss Alex Revell
{by} PA

Stevenage manager Alex Revell felt his side’s 1-1 draw against Rotherham was “a nice way to finish” – but he wanted more.

Sam Nombe had put the Millers ahead in the eighth minute and that seemed to be enough until centre-half Dan Sweeney, thrown on as a makeshift striker after 88 minutes, snuck in to head the ball over goalkeeper Dillon Phillips two minutes into stoppage time.

Boro almost snatched the win moments later but Harvey White’s shot skipped off the turf and hit the keeper in the chest, although he had little clue about it.

Revell said: “The first half was not acceptable at all. The goal was really poor and shouldn’t be going in. We don’t deal with the cross and they probably deserved it at that time, so we made changes and it was much better second half.

“We played the ball forward, we ran forward and we created chances. We didn’t take them but it was a much more Stevenage performance, certainly in the second half.

“First half we struggled to get going and the shape was not idea, but you still have to have desire, you still have to have that work ethic.

“You have to do all of those things and we didn’t do that and we allowed them to pass us off the pitch at times.

“That’s not acceptable but it was a nice way to end the season at home, especially the way it happened.

“And then at the end, it’s a brilliant opportunity and the keeper saves it.

“It’s nice but we wanted more.”

Rotherham manager Matt Hamshaw was disappointed they did not see the game out or kick on after scoring one.

“We didn’t feel we were under any pressure,” he said. “I was disappointed with our attacking play in the second half. I felt like we didn’t hurt them or turn them enough. We played in front of them a little bit too much.

“And the times that we did play and did get in behind, we looked a threat.

“There is loads to work on and loads to look at but loads of positives too, moving forward.

“At this minute in time, it feels like a defeat and yet we’ve got a point away from home.

“You get points away from home and then you have to back them up with home wins.

“If we come back here in October, it’s a point I might be a bit more disappointed in than I am now.

“It is what it is and we’ll go into the last game now before the hard work starts.”
