Nathan Jones hails ‘outstanding’ Charlton display as they wallop Wycombe
{by} PA

Charlton manager Nathan Jones described his side’s 4-0 thumping at Wycombe as ‘professional’.

The Addicks, who sit fourth, came to Adams Park knowing they had to beat the Chairboys, who started the day in second, to keep alive their own automatic promotion chances.

Goals from Lloyd Jones, Luke Berry, Matt Godden and Karoy Anderson put Wanderers to the sword – the first time since Mike Dodds took over that Wycombe had conceded more than one goal at home.

One negative for Charlton was the dismissal of substitute Chuks Aneke in stoppage time following an incident with Luke Leahy.

Jones said: “I am delighted and proud because it’s some performance to come to the team in second and do what we did.

“We knew we had to win and from moment one I thought we were very positive.

“The opening 10 minutes or so were a bit frenetic but when it settled down, we got the first goal and the second came quickly.

“In the second half I wanted us to be more aggressive as I felt we had more quality to show.

“We gave the ball away a bit too much in the first half and I thought we could have put a bit more pressure on them.

“It eventually worked as they made an error [for the third goal] and we went on – we were just outstanding, considering this is a very good team.”

While Charlton remain fourth, they are now two points behind Wycombe, who dropped to third, and four adrift of Wrexham, who won at Blackpool to move into second.

Jones added: “We don’t want to overegg the result as we would have happily taken 1-0 but the level of performance is something I am very pleased with.

“I don’t think we contained them as we wanted to be on the front foot and put pressure and have the ball.

“I’m so pleased with how we played as we were professional.”

Dodds described his side’s showing as “embarrassing”.

He added: “We got what we deserved.

“I’m going to have to do an autopsy of how we have gone from having the best defensive record in the EFL since I’ve been here, as we have prided ourselves on being organised, to gifting Charlton four goals.

“Charlton deserved to win the game as they forced us into errors.

“We have to take this on the chin, have a deep look at it over the next few days, and hope the next two performances are positive as there is everything to play for.

“It was an out-of-character performance and I’m scratching my head as we didn’t do anything different in terms of our processes – we went into the game full of confidence.

“We had only conceded one goal at home in the time that I have been here and it was deflected.

“Today wasn’t acceptable and from my perspective it was embarrassing.”
