Gareth Ainsworth targeting success at Gillingham after win over MK Dons
{by} PA

Gareth Ainsworth is determined to bring success back to Gillingham after his first win in charge.

Bradley Dack came off the bench to score a late winner in a 1-0 victory over MK Dons, leaving the Gills 17th in League Two.

Ainsworth, who swapped Shrewsbury for Gillingham, said: “I’m beginning to learn the area and the culture of Gillingham and that’s important.

“Clubs in these areas you can’t change them. You’ve got to make them better and bigger and more successful and add a few things yourself.

“I want Gillingham to be the Gillingham of old. It’s been too long. I want the fans to come here and know it’s tough for us to get beat at home.

“I don’t think MK Dons had a shot on target and that’s fantastic.

“But we’ve been good defensively. It’s scoring at the other end that I aim to make better come the end of the season.

“For us to nick a last-minute winner, and it wasn’t pretty. It’s not always going to be pretty but what a result.

“To win it in that manner, and for Bradley, getting the goal. He has been through a tough time, a hell of a time.

“He’s a man of quality, and he’s the man that has popped up with the winner today, and he said to me coming off the pitch ‘Thank you, Gaffer.’

“I think that’s reciprocated Bradley, because that goal was a big goal for me.

“I’ve got some real good decisions to make now for the squad going forward. I want to have a good look at the squad now.

“This is a brilliant position to have a look at my squad, in the last few games and go ‘right, what do I want to do? What do I need?’.”

Interim head coach Ben Gladwin believes MK Dons will appoint a new manager this week.

He said: “Not that I have heard. I am sure that one will be in this week.

“I have been told that we expect to see one this week, which will be good news for everybody because the club really needs it.

“The players need it, so fingers crossed the club can get something sorted and give the players some direction.

“It wasn’t the greatest game of football that I have ever come to watch. I thought that the boys dug in and competed. It’s where we are at.

“It’s very disappointing, and as you can imagine, the dressing room is how you would expect.

“I definitely don’t think that we deserved to lose the game, so it was tough to take for the lads.”
