Así será la fase clasificatoria europea para el Mundial 2026

La UEFA ha propuesto a la FIFA un formato con algunos cambios para decidir las 16 selecciones clasificadas para la fase final de Estados Unidos, México y Canadá

La UEFA informó este miércoles que recomendará a la FIFA que utilice un formato de clasificación de las 16 selecciones europeas para el Mundial de 2026 dividido en una fase de grupos y 'play-offs'.

Así lo acordó el Comité Ejecutivo de la UEFA, que explica que la fase de grupos tendrá el formato tradicional con partidos a doble vuelta. Habrá 12 grupos de 4 o 5 selecciones y los partidos se jugarán entre marzo y noviembre de 2025.

Los primeros de cada grupo se clasificarán directamente para el Mundial 2026, que se jugará en Estados Unidos, México y Canadá. Mientras, los 12 segundos participarán en los playoff, que se disputarán en marzo de 2026 con 16 equipos.

Las 16 selecciones del playoff

Además de los 12 segundos de grupo de la fase de clasificación europea, se seleccionará a los cuatro ganadores mejor clasificados de la Nations League 2024/2025 que no hayan terminado su grupo de los clasificatorios europeos en primero o segundo lugar.

Los partidos de playoff se disputarán en semifinales a partido único, seguidos de las finales también a partido único dentro de la misma ventana de partidos internacionales.

Los 16 equipos que participen en estas eliminatorias se dividirán en cuatro rutas de playoff de cuatro selecciones cada una.
